Two years ago, a brand in Dubai looking for AI video had a short list. Today the list is endless. Social media agencies, freelance editors, performance marketers, web studios and people who were selling something else entirely last spring all describe themselves as AI video agencies, and their portfolios look strangely alike.
They look alike because the tools are the same. Anyone can subscribe to the models we use, often for less than the cost of a lunch meeting. So the question for a buyer is not whether an agency has AI. It is whether the agency can make a film, and AI happens to be the camera.
We are an AI video agency ourselves, so read this knowing that. It is still the guide we would want if we were the ones spending the budget.
1. WHY EVERY AGENCY IS SUDDENLY AN AI AGENCY
Generation removed the expensive part of video that used to keep most agencies out: the crew, the camera package, the location and the shoot day. What it did not remove is everything that makes a film work. The script. The decision about what each shot is for. Casting that holds across thirty shots. The edit. The grade. The sound.
An agency that never did those things before AI still does not do them now. It just has a faster way to produce clips. That is the gap you are trying to see into, and it rarely shows on a reel of best moments.
2. WHAT YOU ARE ACTUALLY PAYING FOR
When quotes for the same brief range from a few hundred dirhams to tens of thousands, it is tempting to think the expensive ones are padding. Usually they are pricing a different product.
A low quote is almost always pricing generation: prompts, clips, a music track, an export. A higher quote from a real production company is pricing direction and post production on top of that: a script and storyboard you approve, still frames of every character and location before anything moves, many takes of each shot, an editor, a colourist, a sound designer and versions for each placement. The cheap version is not dishonest. It is just a different thing, and it shows on screen in ways audiences feel even when they cannot name them. We listed the ten most common ones in what makes AI video look like AI.

3. TEN QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOU BRIEF
Ask these in the first call. The quality of the answers will sort the list faster than any showreel.
- Who directs the film? A name, and what they directed before AI existed. Taste and judgement do not come with a subscription.
- Will we approve a script and storyboard first? If generation starts before you have seen boards, you are paying for whatever comes out.
- How do you keep characters consistent? Look for an answer about approved still frames and reference images, not "the latest model handles it".
- How do you handle our real product? Your packaging, label and proportions should be exact in every frame. Ask how they guarantee it.
- Who edits, grades and mixes? If the answer is the same person who wrote the prompts, the film will look like it.
- Can we see full films, not just a reel? A reel shows the best four seconds of each project. A full film shows whether they can tell a story for thirty.
- How many rounds of changes, and at which stage? Good studios put the approvals early, at script and frames, where changes are cheap.
- Who owns the finished film? Ask about the rights to the final film and to the generated material, and whether the tools used allow commercial use.
- Do you work in Arabic properly? Right to left typography, dialect voices and cultural judgement are not a translation step at the end.
- When would you tell us not to use AI? An honest agency has an answer. Some briefs are better shot live, and a company that only owns AI tools will never say so.
4. HOW TO READ A SHOWREEL
Watch it twice. The first time, watch like an audience. The second time, watch like a buyer.
Turn the sound on. A reel with only music under every shot usually means there was never any sound design. Real places have room tone, footsteps and air.
Count the shot lengths. If almost every shot runs about five seconds, the clips went from generator to timeline untouched. Edited films have rhythm: short cuts, long holds, nothing evenly spaced.
Look at the edges of the frame. Background people, signage and reflections are where unedited AI breaks. Arabic signage that is not real Arabic is an instant giveaway to a Gulf audience.
Ask what the brief was. Beautiful frames are easy now. What matters is whether the film did a job for a client, and whether the agency can tell you what that job was.
5. RED FLAGS IN A PROPOSAL
- A price per second of footage, with nothing about script, edit, grade or sound.
- No named director or creative lead.
- Unlimited revisions, which usually means no approval stages and a lot of regenerating at the end.
- Delivery in one aspect ratio, with the rest to be "cropped later".
- Promises that the film will be "fully automated" or made "in minutes".
- Nothing about usage rights, likeness consent or what happens if a platform rejects the ad.
6. WHEN A PREMIUM AGENCY IS THE WRONG CHOICE
Not every brief needs a director and a colourist. If you need a steady flow of quick social ads to test offers, a premium production on each one is the wrong spend.
